Virgin Media broadband 10Gbps Ireland

Surf’s up.

Do people still ‘surf the web’ or was that an exclusively turn of the century thing?

In any event, a brand new €200 million investment is set to provide a huge boost to the national fibre network.

Virgin Media Ireland will deliver speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second for its broadband customers across over one million homes and businesses throughout the country.

The move will also see the creation of 500 jobs in support of the company’s ongoing mission to “supercharge” communities with fibre broadband.

It is anticipated that the project will take three years to complete.

Virgin Media Ireland has also signalled its intention to grant wholesale access to third party service providers.

Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan hailed the new plan.

“I welcome the announcement by Virgin Media that it will undertake a full national fibre upgrade, which will see the further delivery of very high speed broadband to homes and businesses,” said Ryan.

“Continued investments by commercial operators such as this bring benefits for consumers.

“Together with the Government’s investment under the National Broadband Plan, this will place Ireland at the forefront of EU countries in terms of Gigabit connectivity.”
