Volunteers and recruits may cover Garda strike

Rosanna Cooney

They will be very understaffed.

The planned Garda strikes for November will leave 250 officers and 1800 Garda reserve volunteers to police the nation if sergeants and inspectors join the industrial action.

The Garda Reserves are volunteers from the community who are trained to work under the supervision of the regular members of Gardaí.

The President of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) said the AGSI will meet on October 17th to decide whether they will join the rank-and-file Gardaí for the 24 hour strikes planned for each Friday in November.

The Garda strikes come after the Government agreed to a pay increase of 11.25% for Dublin Bus drivers on Thursday.
