The weather for the weekend looks very grim altogether thanks to Storm Jorge

Weather forecast Storm Jorge

Wrap up warm and stay inside, basically…

February is drawing to a close. March is around the corner. Time for things to rapidly improve on the weather front, right?

Eh, maybe not. With a grand total of four separate warnings – two yellow and two orange – issued for the weekend, the outlook is pretty bleak.

Storm Jorge – pronounced ‘Hor-hay’ – is en route, while the National Emergency Coordination Group will meet on Friday morning in anticipation of a difficult few days.

As for a day-by-day breakdown, Met Éireann’s latest forecast illustrates a cloudy and wet enough start to proceedings. Friday (28 February) has heavy rainfall on the horizon, most notably in the west and south, with the possibility of localised flooding thrown in.

Things should become a little drier in the afternoon but look for a fresh band of rain to arise from the southwest in the evening. Temperatures are expected to range from 7 to 11 degrees.

By the time night falls, outbreaks of rain and drizzle should make their presence felt as mild night turns cold with lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees occurring near dawn on Saturday.

Speaking of Saturday, Storm Jorge will introduce itself in the form of strong winds and heavy rain. The west will be particularly impacted as scattered heavy showers turn into a more persistent downpour as the day opens up.

It’s a case of heavy falls in general, with a risk of thunder for good measure. Temperatures will be low, too, with just 4 to 6 degrees forecast for a daytime that could feature sleet and hill snow.

Saturday night, meanwhile, continues the pattern. A cold and frosty night will take hold – lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees – alongside strong winds and gales. Stay inside, basically.

As for Sunday, it should be bright, at least. Hooray! There will also be wintry showers. Can’t win ’em all. The best of those dry bright spells will be found in the east and southeast. The showers, however, will bring with them a risk of hail and thunder.

Expect a generally cold day with highest afternoon temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees. Sunday night will be cold and frosty with clear spells and wintry showers mostly in the west and north. Lowest temperatures, you ask? -1 to +2 degrees. Enjoy.
