Never get caught out without a brolly again.

Members of the Irish public will now be able to access a localised forecast for up to seven days with thanks to the new and improved Met Éireann website and app.

The site showcases regional forecasts with the use of an interactive tool on the homepage, a feature which allows you to pick a spot anywhere in the country and retrieve a detailed forecast.

The new website, upon the reader selecting a location, gives an in-depth look at the weather forecast for the week ahead, including projected rainfall, surface temperature and wind speed and direction.

The charts displayed are broken into hourly intervals for the first 48 hours, before changing to six-hour intervals for up to seven days. A user can hover over each weather type to display exactly what is meant by it via text.

The site and downloadable app will also deliver updated weather warnings to alert users of risks in their area, such as the red alert warnings during Storm Ophelia and Storm Emma.

The website is already being used extensively, particularly during the worst weather conditions, with a peak of 412,000 and 328,000 daily visitors during Ophelia and Emma, respectively.

Met Éireann will also continue to provide national and regional weather forecasts on their website as well as the new localised feature.

The site was launched on Wednesday morning by Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy, who described it as a “useful tool for the Irish public as they go about their daily routine”.

“I would strongly encourage the public to download the new Met.ie app from their phone app store as it is a highly intuitive and easy-to-use product,” Murphy said.

“You will be able to view seven-day forecasts, including predicted rainfall and temperature, for your own local area along with the latest weather observations including live rainfall radar images.”
