weather warnings

Strong winds, ice and even some snow are on the way.

The start of this week may have seemed reasonably pleasant compared to some of the weather we’ve had of late, but, alas, it’s not going to last.

On Tuesday afternoon, Met Éireann issued two separate status yellow warnings that will affect half the country on what will be a fairly wild day on Wednesday.

A status yellow wind warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick will come into effect at 6am on Wednesday morning, with winds expected to reach speeds of 55-60 km/h in places.

The warning will remain in effect until just before midnight on Wednesday night.

Five counties, meanwhile – Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Louth and Leitrim – have been issued with a status yellow snow/ice warning, with a risk of snow showers, especially over high ground, leading to accumulations of up to 3cm in places.

That warning will come into effect at 3am on Wednesday morning and will remain in effect until 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday (depending on your interpretation of the seasons) marks the first day of Spring, but we’re not holding out hope for it marking a dramatic shift in the weather just yet.
