Weather warnings issued for seven counties over snow

Stephen Porzio

Met Éireann has warned of hazardous driving conditions.

Status Yellow snow warnings have been issued for a number of counties and will come into effect later on Wednesday (23 February).

One is a snow and ice alert put out by Met Éireann on Tuesday evening that applies to Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

Valid from 10pm on Wednesday until 10am on Thursday, it states that blustery showers of hail, sleet and snow with icy stretches on untreated surfaces will lead to hazardous driving conditions.

The other is a Status Yellow wind and snow warning issued by the UK Met Office for Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry and will take effect from 1pm on Wednesday until 3pm on Thursday.

“Frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a small chance of frequent lightning affecting some places,” the Met Office warning states.

The warnings come after Met Éireann forecasted snow and wintry showers for some parts of the country earlier in the week.

Its national outlook states that conditions are expected to become drier for Friday and Saturday before turning wet for a time later this weekend.

Update @ 11.50am

A second Status Yellow weather warning has been issued as of Wednesday morning.

The warning concerns two counties – Donegal and Mayo – with Met Éireann noting that very strong and gusty west to southwest winds are expected to impact the regions across the morning and into the afternoon.

This warning is in place until 3pm on Wednesday.
