Woman arrested following car fire death of two children in Westmeath

A woman has been arrested following a car fire in Westmeath that claimed the lives of two young children earlier this month.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon, 9 September. Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the fire in the Multyfarnham area of Westmeath.

A female adult was taken from the scene by air ambulance to a Dublin hospital for treatment. Her injuries were described at the time as serious.

An infant boy, aged two, was removed from the scene by ambulance and taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar. He has since been pronounced dead.

The remains of a juvenile female, aged five, were also discovered at the scene.

Gardaí noted they were investigating “all circumstances” regarding the tragedy. On Wednesday (21 September), Garda personnel arrested a woman aged in her 40s in connection with the incident.

The woman has been detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984,  at a Garda station in the midlands.

Investigations are ongoing.
