Man, 80s, killed and three others injured in two-vehicle collision in Westmeath

Horrific news.

A man in his 80s has died and three others have been injured following a two-vehicle collision in Westmeath on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services are on the scene of the collision, which occurred on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard at around 5.30am.

The man killed was a passenger in one of the vehicles and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The female driver, 60s, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Two other males in the other vehicle, one in his 30s and one in his 20s, were also taken to separate hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

In a statement to JOE on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle road traffic collision involving cars, that occurred on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.

“The collision occurred at approximately 5.30am this morning, Wednesday 3rd July 2024.

“The male passenger of the first car (aged in his 80’s) was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The female driver (60’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

“The male driver of the second car (30’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

“The male passenger (20’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

“The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, between 4.45am and 5.45am this morning, Wednesday 3rd July 2024, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

The incident the the second fatal crash in Westmeath in the last 24 hours.

A man in his 50s died after a single-vehicle crash on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard on Tuesday evening at around 6.40pm.

Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses to come forward who were travelling in the area.
