Gardaí launch witness appeal into deaths at Cork Ironman event

An Garda Síochána are assisting the Cork County Coroner with its investigation into the deaths.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for assistance with the investigation into the deaths of two men during an Ironman event in Youghal, Cork last month.

Brendan Wall, 44, and Ivan Chittenden, 64, passed away in separate incidents while taking part in the 1.7km swim section of the competition on Sunday, 20 August.

In a new statement on Thursday (7 September), Gardaí say they are currently assisting the Cork County Coroner with its investigation into the deaths and subsequent inquest.

A coroner is an independent public official who is legally responsible for investigating sudden, violent or unexplained deaths in order to find out if the deaths are due to natural or unnatural causes.

Gardaí launch witness appeal into deaths at Cork Ironman event

As part of the Cork County Coroner's investigation, Gardaí are requesting that anyone who was present at the swimming section of the Ironman event and who may have video footage in any format to contact Gardaí at Midleton on 021-4621550.

The public are not requested to submit any footage at this time.

Instead, members of the investigation team will make contact with them to arrange for the appropriate collection of any video material.
