A woman has died, and a child is in critical condition after a road crash in Cavan.

The collision involved a car and a truck. It occurred just after 5pm on Friday (24 July) on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger in the car, who Gardaí describe as "a female juvenile child", was transported from the scene to Temple Street Hospital. She remains there in "critical condition".

"A number of other people occupant of these vehicles received medical treatment at the scene by ambulance staff. No other injuries have been reported," a Garda spokesperson said.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

"Any road users who were travelling in this area between 4.45pm and 5.15pm yesterday and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí," the spokesperson added.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Bailieborough Garda Station on 042 969 4570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
