Work begins to pedestrianise Dublin City Centre streets to facilitate outdoor dining

Stephen Porzio

Restaurants and bars are set to reopen for outdoor service from 7 June.

Work has begun to pedestrianise a number of streets in Dublin City Centre in order to facilitate outdoor dining.

Dublin City Council has confirmed that the works began this week and are set to continue over the coming weeks.

As part of the plan, four streets are to become traffic-free or have sections of them traffic-free daily after 11am from Monday, 24 May.

The streets to become pedestrianised are:

  • Anne Street South from the junction of Dawson Street
  • South William Street from Exchequer Street to the Brown Thomas car park exit
  • Drury Street from just after its junction with Fade Street to the Drury Street underground car park
  • Dame Court From Exchequer Street

The decision to carry out the work was made after weekend pedestrianisation trials took place over six weekends during the summer of 2020.

An online survey conducted by Dublin City Council into the trials received 1,588 responses, with 95% in favour of permanently pedestrianising the streets.

The work was originally scheduled to take place in January 2021 but the plans were put on hold when Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions were introduced.

However, with the resumption of all construction activity from 4 May, Dublin City Council has confirmed the work to pedestrianise the four streets has commenced.

Dublin City Council has also said it is working on plans to increase pedestrian and dining space in other parts of Dublin City Centre.

From 7 June, restaurants and bars are set to reopen for outdoor service.
