EU and UK officials are set to resume talks on Wednesday morning ahead of a key summit on Thursday.

Following talks that ran into the early hours of Wednesday morning, representatives for the European Union and the United Kingdom will meet once again in a bid to reach a deal as Brexit negotiations enter a critical stage.

Officials will aim to settle on a revised Withdrawal Agreement by 11am Brussels time (10am GMT) on Wednesday.

As such, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a race against the clock despite Downing Street’s insistence that the most recent set of talks proved “constructive”.

As has been the case throughout the Brexit process, the issue of the Irish border remains the sticking point.

On Tuesday, Johnson met with leaders of the DUP and Conservative Brexiters of the European Research Group in an attempt to achieve a solution on the border problem.

Reports emerged in the evening that Johnson is “on the brink” of a deal, having made “major concessions” regarding the Irish border.

The Guardian noted that the negotiating teams have seemingly agreed, in principle, that there will be a customs border established down the Irish Sea; an arrangement previously rejected by Theresa May, who stated that no British Prime Minister could accept such an outcome.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier is due to brief ambassadors from the 27 EU member states at lunchtime on Wednesday.

During this address, Barnier will confirm if a deal has been reached ahead of a key summit due to take place on Thursday.
