“Our relationship with Russia is worse than it’s ever been and that includes the Cold War.”

Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to warn Russia about the dangers of aligning themselves with Syria after a Russian ambassador stated that they will shoot down any missiles fired at the country.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, Trump described the missiles that will hit Syria as “nice and new and smart”, before going on to refer to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as a “Gas Killing Animal”.

The tweet was posted amid reports that the Trump administration has consulted with global allies on a response to a suspected Syrian chemical attack that killed 4o people in the town of Douma on Saturday.

The Syrian government has denied responsibility for the attack.

“If there is a strike by the Americans, the missiles will be downed,” said Alexander Zasypkin, Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon, on Tuesday evening.

As well as urging Russia to “get ready”, Trump went on to say that the relationship between America and Russia is worse than it was during the cold war.
