Joe Biden has been confirmed as the winner of the state of Georgia in the US election after a recount, taking his electoral vote count to 306.
Biden is the first democrat to win the southern state since Bill Clinton in 1996.
The recount brought Donald Trump 1,400 votes closer to Biden’s tally, but he still lost. The margin of error was low enough to constitute human error and showed no indication of voter fraud, said Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger.
“Georgia’s historic first statewide audit reaffirmed that the state’s new secure paper ballot voting system accurately counted and reported results,” Raffensperger said.
“This is a credit to the hard work of our county and local elections officials who moved quickly to undertake and complete such a momentous task in a short period of time.”
“The recount process simply reaffirmed what we already knew: Georgia voters selected Joe Biden to be their next president,” said Jaclyn Rothenberg, the Biden campaign spokeswoman, in an email to the Associated Press.
“We are grateful to the election officials, volunteers and workers for working overtime and under unprecedented circumstances to complete this recount, as the utmost form of public service.”
Biden is now approaching a record 80 million votes, over 10 million more than the previous record held by Barack Obama, after the highest turnout in over a century.
Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyer Rudi Guiliani was giving a disastrous press conference in which he continued the baseless claims of voter fraud, this time trying to compare the situation to a film called My Cousin Vinny.
But his address will go down in history not for any great speech, but for the sight of his black hair dye running down the side of his face.
