Presidential Debate

Virgin Media has released viewing figures for last night’s presidential debate — and viewing numbers peaked at 738,000.

The debate was the first televised debate to feature all six of the presidential candidates — incumbent President Michael D. Higgins, Senator Joan Freeman, Liadh Ní Riada MEP, businessman Gavin Duffy, businessman Sean Gallagher and businessman Peter Casey.

The 90 minute debate, hosted by Pat Kenny, delivered an overall average audience of 434,000 and commanded a 44% share of viewing.

A further 10,500 viewers tuned in to watch the debate live on the Virgin Media Player.

Proceedings were dominated by discussion of businessman Peter Casey’s comments about the Travelling community.

There is one more debate to go before the public goes to the polls. RTÉ’s Prime Time debate, hosted by David McCullagh, will air on Tuesday 23 October, three days before election day.
