In 'we didn't see that coming' news, it is being reported that Eric Elwood will ‘step back’ from rugby with Connacht at the end of this season.
Earlier today the coaches of the four Irish provinces posed for pictures to promote the start of the Heineken Cup next week. Little did we know that just hours later, news would filter through that one would be leaving their job.
According to Brendan Fanning's blog, Eric Elwood will be leaving Connacht at the end of this current season, with the demands of the job cited by Fanning as the reason for his departure. Elwood is expected to elaborate tomorrow in more detail on his decision.
The move is a shock and a massive blow to Connacht, who have improved under Elwood’s tutelage. The former Irish out-half took over two years ago and led the Western province into the Heineken Cup for the first time.
At least the powers that be at the Sportsgrounds have time to find a replacement but Elwood will be a loss to the game as well as Connacht. We hope he will return at some point.
