Michael Healy-Rae reveals the real story about Enda Kenny offering him a ministry
What could have been...
Independent TD for Kerry Michael Healy-Rae was once in consideration for a ministerial position.
Speaking on Ireland Unfiltered with Dion Fanning, Healy-Rae revealed how he once was nearly given a job in government as Minister for Rural Affairs.
He spoke about how Enda Kenny approached him and said how people were saying he was the ideal candidate for a ministry position he was considering creating and would he be interested in taking the role.
However, rumours subsequently spread that Healy-Rae had been offered the role and had turned it down, something he is keen to state is categorically untrue.
You can read what he had to say below.
Michael: The answer I gave [to Enda Kenny]... I said to him 'You haven't done a deal yet with Fianna Fáil, and he was sort of saying, 'It should be you here and you should have it'.
But at the same time, he hadn't spoken to Fianna Fáil so he couldn't offer me anything.
I said, 'Look Taoiseach there's an awful lot to be done here in putting together a proper programme for government, after you talk to Fianna Fáil, can't we see what will happen?'
He couldn't offer me anything but he said we'll talk again. He did talk to Fianna Fáil and when he was in a position to offer roles, he was ringing people left, right and centre, but he never rang me. That was his prerogative... but other people who were trying to make me look bad opposite the public in Kerry were saying Mike was offered the job and he wouldn't take it.
That was a lie. It was a lie. I've always told the truth and if Enda Kenny ever feels like coming out and telling the truth about what happened then he'll tell you what I'm after telling you right now because that's what happened.
