18 absolutely perfect moments from sports films

Paul Moore

Seen any of these?

Oscar season is in full swing but after indulging in another Friday Night Lights binge over the weekend, we’ve only got sporting glory on our minds. Marge Simpson might think that sports are just a small part of life but she’s wrong.

Here’s our favourite sporting moments from some truly memorable films.

Friday Night Lights

The scene: The state final comes down to its final play as the dreams and hopes of the Permian Panthers will be decided by a few seconds.  Daniel Lanois’ stunning track will give you goosebumps.

Top marks: Without even saying a word, these few minutes are more powerful than 100 dramas combined.

The Mighty Ducks

The scene: It all comes down to this. Can coach Bombay inspire Charlie to step up and win the title for the Ducks?

Top marks: Nostalgia has rarely been this good.

Tin Cup

The scene: It’s the final hole of the US Open and rather than just take the easy option of laying up his approach shot, Roy McAvoy chases an eagle to win outright.

Top marks: Sometimes you just have to stop playing it safe and go for it.

Slap Shot

The scene: The Hanson Brothers are about to make their debut for the Charlestown Chiefs.

Top marks: Never judge a book by its cover, especially when this book turns out to be a ‘f**ing disgrace’. Who needs fair play anyway?

The Damned United

The scene: An under-fire Brian Clough is summoned to a meeting with the Leeds United board.

Top marks: It nails the swagger and complexity of one of football’s most fascinating characters.

Rocky

The scene: That final bout with Apollo Creed.

Top marks: There’s no better feeling than being able to look yourself in the mirror and know that you gave it everything.

Caddyshack

The scene: The most fecked up ending of any golf tournament.

Top marks: If only all tournaments ended like this. I’d give anything to hear Rory McIlroy deliver Rodney Dangerfield’s line.

Hoop Dreams

The scene: William Gates is playing basketball by himself and reflecting on life.

Top marks: Sometimes sport just doesn’t work out how you plan.

The Karate Kid

The scene: After Johnny was cynically ordered to sweep the leg of Daniel LaRusso, our Karate Kid is forced to defy the odds once again.

Top marks: It’s proof that practice makes perfect.

Remember The Titans

The scene: Impossible to chose just one.

Top marks: It nails the concept of what it means to be a team.

Happy Gilmore

The scene: In a fit of rage, Happy Gilmore threatens to glass Shooter McGavin at the bar.

Top marks: All sports need a great rivalry that goes beyond the pitch/course etc. Happy really does have the ability to get under Shooter’s skin and vice versa. They both need to just lay by the bay…

Escape from Victory

The scene: The final match that features Pele, Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone and Osie Ardiles among others.

Top marks: It’s cheesy as hell but we all tried to emulate that flick from Ardlies.

Rudy

The scene:  After years of trying, Rudy finally gets his shot at the big time.

Top marks: Sometimes it’s not the size of the dog that’s in the fight – but how much he wants to be there.

Kingpin

The scene: Big Ern effortlessly wins legions of fans all over the country.

Top marks: There are people in sport that you just love to hate. He’s one of them but then again, he’s also a hero in his own warped way.  FIND THE MEAT!

Raging Bull

The scene:  Jake LaMotta vs Sugar Ray Robinson. Brutal, painful and poetic.

Top marks: If you’re going down, go down on your own terms.

Chariots of Fire

The scene: What else could it be?

Top marks: It inspired countless sporting montages.

Cool Runnings

The scene: Disaster strikes on the final race.

Top marks: There’s a huge difference between losing and losing with dignity.

Any Given Sunday

The scene: Often parodied, never bettered.

Top marks: If you need to get fired up then this is essential.
