The love of his life played a key role.
It seems like a long time now when Alex Ferguson hung up his managerial boots, such has been the tumult at Old Trafford since his departure.
The legendary ex-Manchester United boss has been speaking candidly about the true reason for his retirement – the death of his sister-in-law and the deep impact it had on his wife, Cathy.
Speaking to The Telegraph, the Scot said, “I saw Cathy was watching television one night, and she looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was isolated. Her and Bridget were twins, you know?”
He continued, “But when I told her this time I was going to retire she had no objection whatsoever. I knew she wanted me to do it.”
Ahead of launching his new book on the art of management, Ferguson has revealed the ease at which he dealt with big egos, using Cristiano Ronaldo as an example.
“You used to see Ronaldo standing in front of the mirror loving himself.
“But it was a nice vanity. The players used to throw jockstraps, boots and all sorts at him.”
