Autopsy reveals that Anthony Foley died of acute pulmonary edema

Conor Heneghan

Foley’s remains will be flown home to Shannon Airport on Wednesday.

An autopsy has revealed that Anthony Foley died of an “acute pulmonary edema”, the Nanterre (a suburb west of Paris) public prosecutor told AFP.

Foley, 42, died suddenly in Paris at the weekend prior to Munster’s Champions Cup clash with Racing 92, a death that came as a huge shock to the rugby community and wider sporting community in Ireland.

Pulmonary edema is a condition caused by excess fluid in the lungs and speaking to AFP, the prosecutor said that his death could “be linked to a cardiac problem” without providing any further details.

The results of further toxicological tests will emerge in the coming weeks.
