Hopefully the situation is now under control

Following the cancellation of Manchester United’s game with Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, after the discovery of a ‘suspect package’ in the NW quadrant of the ground, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that a ‘controlled explosion’ has been carried out within the stadium.

With the stands safely evacuated of supporters and officials, and the media later told to leave – which saw Sky Sports’ pundits analyse the day’s results from the forecourt – the bomb disposal unit were called in to carry out the security operation.

The GM Police confirmed via their Twitter account:

‘Latest update: A controlled explosion has just been carried out within the stadium by bomb disposal experts at Old Trafford. More to follow.’

The fixture will now be rearranged, although this may affect United’s preparations for the FA Cup final versus Crystal Palace.
