The Offaly man reffed the 2011 decider between Kilkenny and Tipp.

We are still a few weeks away from the eagerly anticipated replay of last Sunday's superb All Ireland hurling final between Kilkenny and Tipperary but we already know who will be the man in the middle. The GAA announced today that taking over from Barry Kelly will be Offaly's Brian Gavin. Gavin is no stranger to these two teams, as he officiated the 2011 final between these two sides. He is best remembered in that game for getting an accidental blow to the head from Kilkenny's Tommy Walsh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4rpYMklKQM Kelly also refereed the drawn 2013 final between Clare and Cork.
