It still galls that we won’t be seeing him on the pitch anymore but rugby fans are still going to see and hear a lot of Brian O’Driscoll next season.

BT Sport today announced that the former Leinster, Ireland and Lions captain and all-round legend will feature on BT Sport next season and will carry out various roles for the broadcaster, including acting as a rugby expert and a BT Sport ambassador.

The news comes on the back of the recent announcement that O’Driscoll will also become a part of the Off the Ball team on Newstalk a little later in the year and it appears as if this ‘take it easy in retirement’ lark isn’t a path that the greatest Irish player of all-time wasn’t keen on pursuing for too long.

O’Driscoll’s main role for BT Sport – distributed in Ireland as part of the Setanta Sports pack – will be as a rugby expert on coverage of the newly formed European Rugby Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup. He will also appear on BT Sport’s weekly Rugby Show, Rugby Tonight, with Craig Doyle.

Commenting on the announcement, O’Driscoll said: “I’m excited to be embarking on one of the next steps in my career with BT Sport.

“It’s a big change for me but I’m looking forward to the challenge and being involved at the inception of the brand new European tournament at a brand new channel like BT Sport. I’m joining BT Sport because I’ve been impressed by their new and fresh approach to rugby coverage and I’m looking forward to being a part of their team.”

If he’s even half as good as in the studio as he was on the pitch, then his punditry career should be a roaring success and we wish BOD all the best in the new gig.
