Footballer Ched Evans’ rape conviction has been quashed today after his appeal of the original verdict was successful. He will now face a retrial.
Evans, 27, was originally convicted of rape in April 2012 and sentenced to four years in prison. He went on to serve half of that sentence.
The former Man City and Sheffield United striker has consistently protested his innocence, and has been unable to play football since his conviction two years ago.
The three-judge panel today decided that Evans’ appeal was strong enough to overturn the verdict of his original trial. He will face a new trial.
