This won’t go down too well at all.

On Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo strongly denied claims that he raped an American woman in 2009 after allegations were revisited in an article in a German newspaper over the weekend.

Ronaldo tweeted to strongly deny the claims, saying: “Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

He then posted a second tweet, further claiming his innocence, saying: “My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”

Just over 24 hours after Ronaldo posted the tweets, his club Juventus have made a bizarre statement on the situation.

The Italian club posted on their official Twitter page to say: “Ronaldo has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus

“The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion.”

The statement made by the Italian club has gathered controversy since it was posted, with some people describing it as tone deaf.
