WATCH: Former Leinster and Connacht rugby star successfully completes epic 4,800km row across Atlantic Ocean

Rory Cashin

The former rugby star finished the incredible solo journey at 9.30pm Irish time.

Damian Browne left the Canary Islands on Thursday 14 December, and over two months later, he docked his boat Gulliver’s Travels on the Caribbean Island of Antigua.

The 37-year-old took on the solo challenge with nothing for company but enough food to last him the nine week journey, and over the course of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, he posted video updates to his Atlantic Row Facebook page.

Browne was rowing in an effort to raise funds for his chosen charities MADRA Dog Rescue & Adoption, Médecins Sans Frontieres and the Strong Roots Foundation School Rwanda, all of which can be donated to on the Facebook page, too.

In the last few mornings, Browne reported that it was by far the hardest part of his journey, not least because contained “ever-present howling wind and raging seas, now joined by frequent squalls”.

Upon reaching dry land – clearly over-joyed but also relieved and exhausted – Browne thanked everyone for their support along the way.

Here is some very emotional footage of Browne making it back to dry land, and greeted by a host of very happy faces to see him return in one piece:
