One of the former Man United manager’s better calls.

David Beckham has told Graham Norton how Alex Ferguson made him shave off his mohawk before the Charity Shield against Liverpool in 2001.

The former England captain saw his relationship grow colder with Ferguson before he moved to Real Madrid in 2003, and Beckham said that Fergie was no fan of his more ‘individualistic’ hairstyles.

In an interview to air on Friday night, he said: “I was in the dressing room with an hour to go before kick off when Sir Alex Ferguson saw it and made me shave it off,” Beckham revealed.

“I said no at first and then I saw his face change very quickly so I went and shaved it off in the toilet. He was very strict.”

Talking about his hairstyles down through the years, Beckham admitted that his cornrows were a particularly bad decision.

“The topknot wasn’t too bad but the cornbraids were a bad decision. It was bad timing as well as I was going to South Africa at the time with England and ended up meeting Nelson Mandela so that’s why I regret that one.”
