Olympic disappointment as Katie Taylor beaten in the quarter-finals

Carl Kinsella

Katie Taylor’s Olympic quarter-final and gold medal defence has ended in disappointment.

Mira Potkonen has progressed to the semi-finals and an automatic bronze medal after having overcome one of Ireland’s finest pugilists.

Taylor fought a hard battle with her Finnish opponent, giving the three judges plenty to think about but in the end Potkonen made her way into the semi-finals on a split decision.

It was a clear win for Katie in the first round, but after that the momentum of the fight swung in favour of Potkonen. By the fourth round, Jimmy McGee noted that Taylor was the busier of the two fighters, and Potkonen took Taylor’s attacks well.

All in all, it’s another boxing disappointment for Ireland at this year’s Olympics.
