Former Ireland midfielder Andy Reid forced to retire from football

The news comes on the midfielder’s 34th birthday.

Andy Reid has retired from football.

The Dubliner has not played a first team game for his club Nottingham Forest in almost two years, having failed to recover from a long standing groin problem, and calls it a day as he turns 34 on Friday.

“I have no regrets and I know I did positive things for every team I played for,” said Reid.

“I’m just really, really disappointed that I couldn’t finish on a high, maybe with a promotion for Forest. There isn’t always a happy ending though.

“I think my fairytale in football is the fact that I’ve had a long and, in my opinion, good, career. I’m very, very grateful for that. I’ve had some wonderful experiences, played in some big games, for some big clubs, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Reid had two spells with Forest, and also played for Tottenham, Charlton Athletic, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Blackpool before returning to the City Ground in July 2011.

A technically gifted playmaker, Reid made his Republic of Ireland debut against Canada in November 2003 and played under Steve Staunton, Brian Kerr and Don Givens.

Reid was controversially overlooked by Giovanni Trapattoni during the Italian’s spell in charge, with his final cap coming under Noel King against Kazakhstan on 15 October 2013. In total, he made 29 appearances for his country, scoring four times.
