Watching Wednesday night Champions League matches for free in Ireland is a thing of the past

Champions League Ireland

This is a massive change.

Irish football fans have long been able to watch midweek Champions League matches on free-to-air RTÉ 2 and TV3 channels.

This is set to change following Virgin Media’s takeover of TV3. The Wednesday night games, which were traditionally broadcast free-to-air on TV3, will now air on the new channel Virgin Media Sports.

Unfortunately for Irish viewers, “Non-Virgin Media customers will also have to pay up to €20 a month to access the sports channel” according to the Irish Times.

Those who are already Virgin Media TV subscribers will be able to access the games as part of their subscription.

However, Virgin Media 1 (which is the new name for TV3) will still be airing the 6pm kick-off on Tuesday nights, while RTÉ will have the 8pm kick-off on Tuesday night. Virgin Media Sports will be hosting the rest of the matches.
