Gallery: Belfast has a new champion – Carl Frampton beats Kiko Martinez to lift title

What a night.

What a night.

Carl Frampton secured the 19th win of his unbeaten career in beating Kiko Martinez from Spain to lift the IBF World Super-Bantamweight title, just a stone’s throw from where he grew up in Belfast, on Saturday night.

The fight went the distance but Frampton’s class told throughout, with the final scorecard reading 119-108, 119-108, 118-111 in favour of the 27-year-old.

The Titanic Quarter shook as 16,000 packed into the purpose-built arena and Martinez proved a tough opponent for Frampton.

The 29-year-old from Alicante was down in the fifth but regrouped and did not make life easy for Frampton, but the longer the bout went on the more dominant the home fighter became and, by the end of the 12th, the result was a formality.

Next for Frampton would appear to be a clash with either WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz or British rival Scott Quigg.
