Brian O'Driscoll's career as a player came to a premature end during Leinster's Rabo Direct PRO12 final against Glasgow Warriors.
The 35-year-old was forced off the pitch after only eight minutes with a knee injury, with Leinster going on to record a well deserved 34-12 victory.
The centre is commonly held to be the best player to have ever played for his country, and was part of the Ireland side that won the RBS Six Nations earlier this year.
All in all he won three European Cups with Leinster, two Six Nations - including the 2009 Grand Slam - and went on tour with the British and Irish Lions four times.
O'Driscoll is the all-time top try scorer in the Six Nations, the record Irish caps holder and was awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin earlier this year.
