Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault from an underage game in Cavan.

The incident is believed to have taken place in a minor league game between Cavan Gaels and Crosserlough on Saturday.

That game was played out in Breffni Park’s 3G pitch but was said to have been abandoned before full time owing to a melee.

Reports in the Irish Independent and the Irish Sun reference alleged ‘racist’ abuse during the same incident.

But An Garda Síochána have told JOE that an alleged assault was reported and that an investigation has been launched.

“Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault at Breffni Park, Cavan on the 11th of February,” they confirmed. “The incident was reported to Gardaí at 3.00pm.

“A juvenile alleges he was assaulted during a football game.”

A spokesperson for Cavan GAA has also confirmed that the county will be investigating the issue.

“We are aware of an alleged incident during a match at the weekend,” the Cavan response read.

“We are waiting to receive the referee’s report from the match and then we’ll see where we will go from there.

“It will be discussed at our weekly Cavan County Board meeting — but we are investigating it for sure.”
