Get your Mooju back: Keith Earls makes his first Ireland appearance for 29 months

The Munster back returns

JOE

This was so much more than just a friendly for the Munster man.

Believe it, or not, this was Keith Earls’ first game under Joe Schmit. It has been 29 months since the Munster man’s last test match and he certainly had a point to prove in Cardiff.

The game finished with Ireland running out 35-21 victors, but this scoreline flattered the Welsh who were second best throughout.

It wasn’t a perfect afternoon for the Irish with Tommy O’Donnell and Andrew Trimble suffering injuries. However, Earls will remember his afternoon for all the right reasons.

His game was full of strong running, line-breaks and industrious defending. He looked every inch the sort of player Ireland will require if they are to go far in this Autumn’s tournament.

His hard work was rewarded with a fantastic try after Andrew Trimble forced a turn-over.

Robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne are likely to be Ireland’s first choice centres for the tournament, but having Earls on the bench would be a useful option.

His clever line-running, pace and experience could be useful in exploiting weak defences as Ireland navigate their way through the group stage.

We wouldn’t be surprised if we see him on the pitch when Ireland play Canada on September 19. Now, that’s a serious return to form for the former Lion.
