The bizarre exclusion of Juan Mata from most of Chelsea’s games this season has been a real head scratcher. The Blues best player since he arrived, the little Spaniard’s start against Southampton yesterday was only his eighth league appearance of the season, and just his sixth start.
Mata played very well yesterday, bagging an assist as Chelsea won 3-1. However, the highlight of his performance was this frankly ridiculous first-time pass with his left peg that split the Saints defence wide open setting Eden Hazard free.
Sadly the GIF doesn’t give you the audible gasp from Stanford Bridge when he hit the pass but we imagine you are making a similar noise yourself right now.
And we’re definitely going to go out to the car park and try it at lunch time.
