We’re doing our bit to bring you up to speed on a night at the dogs. Last week we gave you all the facts and figures of greyhound racing in Ireland – plus The Simpsons and the Bible! Here’s our first stadium profile: Limerick Greyhound Stadium.

What’s the deal?

Greyhound racing has been a staple of life in Limerick for the best part of a century, having started at the old Markets Field site in 1932. The state-of-the-art new Limerick Greyhound Stadium opened in October 2010.

The stadium has a capacity of over 2000 and the track itself is built to the highest specifications. There is a spacious viewing area, private and exclusive hospitality suites and an impressive bar (so you can shield yourself from the elements, of course).

How do I get there?

The stadium is easily accessible just a short distance from Limerick City Centre. It also offers 750 secure parking spaces. You’ll find detailed directions here.

When’s the best night to go?

Racing takes place every Friday and Saturday night with 12 races on each card, the first off at 7.45pm.

What’s the highlight?

Limerick hosts one of the great classics of Irish greyhound racing, the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger, the final of which takes place in July each year.

Anything else?

It’s not just greyhound racing on offer, of course. There is also after racing entertainment in the Markets Field Bar to make sure the fun goes on well into the night.

That’s all very well, but what if I’m hungry?

Then you’ll be in the right place. Limerick Greyhound Stadium boasts an impressive 190-seat restaurant, private hospitality suites and gallery bars. All in all, These facilities are complemented in no small way by the superb dining experience provided by the people at Kudos Creative Catering, who have also won plenty of fans for their cuisine at the greyhound stadia in Cork and Galway. And if you’re looking for something a bit more on-the-go, then there’s also carvery and fast food available.

And the damage?

€10 for adults, €5 for OAPs and students (with valid ID – they’ll be checking the dates) and children are free.
