Here’s the cheapest way to get to Bosnia for the first leg of Ireland’s crucial Euro 2016 play-off

It's not exactly straightforward

Only hardcore fans need apply.

There was a palpable sense of optimism amongst Irish football supporters when we were drawn to face Bosnia-Herzegovina in next month’s Euro 2016 play-offs.

Sure, it could have been better (cough, Hungary, cough) but it could have been worse too and although Bosnia are opponents to be respected, we definitely have a fighting chance of qualification.

One of the drawbacks about being pitted with Bosnia is that there aren’t going to be a lot of Irish fans cheering us on in the away leg (more on that here) and those that do plan on going will have to go on a bit of an adventure to get there.

Still, knowing that Irish football fans are a loyal bunch and that some will be absolutely determined to be there to cheer on the boys in green on Friday, November 13, we’ve done a bit of research to try and find the best way to go about getting there.

It’s going to be one hell of a trip and we don’t say that lightly.

Flights

The closest airport to Zenica, the likely location for the match, is Sarajevo Airport, approximately 70km to the south.

There are no direct flights from anywhere in Ireland to Sarajevo so if you are hell-bent on going, be warned that you’ll have to put up with an airport layover or two.

If you’re there for the game and the game only, your best bet is to fly over on the Thursday (November 12) and back on the Saturday (November 14).

There are options that involve just one (very long) layover on the way there and the way back, but as far as we can see from checking SkyScanner and Google Flights, this route, with brief layovers in Frankfurt and Vienna both ways, is far more agreeable.

It’s an early start Thursday morning and a late finish on Saturday night and should have you there and back for under €400.

Alternatively, if you can spare on an extra day, you’ll save a decent wedge on the same flights by leaving on the Wednesday morning.

That extra day will allow for a more relaxed build-up to the game, but you’ll probably spend the money you save on food and drink and accommodation by extending your trip.

Getting from Sarajevo to Zenica

As stated above, it’s only 70km or so from Sarajevo to Zenica, so if you or one of your travelling party is comfortable enough to operate a vehicle in Eastern Europe, then renting a car might be a decent option for the return trip.

You can check out further options here, but prices starting from around €60 for three days sounds decent to us.
