We’re all just recovering from an incredible weekend of sporting action that saw Spurs pummel Man City, Chelsea lose further ground at the top, Alexis Sanchez return to his scintillating best, Cork’s ladies continue their incredible success, Wales defy the odds at Twickenham and Ireland record another impressive victory at the World Cup.

All this without mentioning countless other brilliant matches, meetings and races over the weekend.

Brace yourself though because next weekend, mainly Sunday October 4th, looks set to be an absolutely incredible day of sport (especially for football fans) and here’s why. All of these events are taking place on Sunday.

Rugby

Ireland v Italy: 16:45 K.O

Joe Schmidt will have expected to pick up the two wins against Canada and Romania but the serious business starts here while the Azzuri will be looking to improve from their poor performance against the Canadians at the weekend.

Football

Premier League

Everton v Liverpool : 13:30 K.O and Arsenal v Manchester United : 16:00 K.O

Brendan Rodgers will have breathed a huge sigh of relief after that win against Aston Villa on Saturday while ‘Pool fans will be delighted to see Sturridge make a goalscoring return. Wouldn’t Everton just love it though to compound the misery on their neighbours?

Arsenal v Liverpool - Premier League

Manchester United currently sit at the top of the league but Van Gaal’s men will face the first major test of their title winning credentials when they travel to the Emirates. Gunners fans must be absolutely delighted to see Alexis rediscover his best form ahead of this crunch meeting.

during the Capital One Cup Third Round match between Manchester United and Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on September 23, 2015 in Manchester, England.

La Liga

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid : 19:30 K.O

It’s the unfancied Villarreal that currently sit at the top of La Liga right now and Rafa Benitez will know that a win in his first Madrid derby as the manager of Real will be a huge boost. Atletico have already lost twice this season and Simeone’s charges really can’t afford to drop even further behind the early pace setters.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund : 16:30 K.O

Germany’s top two teams battle it out once again as Dortmund travel to the Allianz Arena looking to bridge the four point gap on Pep Guardiola’s men. Thomas Tuchel has given BVB a new lease of life following a disappointing season by their own high standards in Klopp’s final season at the helm but it doesn’t get much tougher than facing the German champions in their own ground.

Elsewhere

There will be no love lost when French champions PSG play host to bitter rivals Marseille (20:00 K.O) or maybe you prefer to watch Mario Balotelli’s AC Milan take on Napoli in Serie A (19:45). The biggest game in Dutch football also takes place as Ajax host PSV earlier in the day (13:30 K.O) and our own FAI Cup reaches the business stages when Bray Wanderers host Cork City in their semi-final (14:00 K.O).

I’m also reliably informed by a JOE reader that it’s also Arc de Triomphe day also. What a day of sport.
