History repeating itself – Barcelona keep up impressive record during Papal Conclave

We should have really looked to the history books last night and put a wager on Barca to dismantle AC Milan. It’s just what they do during a Papal Conclave.

Written off in many quarters after back-to-back defeats to Real Madrid and a humbling first-leg defeat at the San Siro, they stormed through to the quarter-finals with a 4-0 rout of the Italians, but this was merely history repeating itself.

In 1958 and 1978, they also repeated victories by the same scoreline, and one lucky punter may have paid more heed to religious history than us when he backed the score in his four-way accumulator last night, scooping almost £50,000 in the process.

For any Arsenal fans looking for divine intervention tonight, don’t get your hopes up. The club have played two away games during a Papal Conclave (also 1958 and 1978) and ended up losing both.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.
