The showpiece event for women’s rugby is coming to Ireland.

IRFU chief executive Philip Browne today broke the good news that World Rugby has chosen Ireland as tournament hosts for the Women’s World Cup in 2017.

The current Six Nations champions will relish taking on the world’s best in their own backyard.

The Irish team memorably beat the previously unbeaten New Zealand (pic below) in the last World Cup tournament in France last year.

Unfortunately they succumbed to England in the semi-finals, but will fancy their chances on home soil this time around.

Who knows, if the hosting of the tournament all goes to plan, maybe it will help Ireland’s chances of hosting the men’s version six years later?
