WATCH: Scandalous refereeing decision in Denmark costs Ireland goal chance at end of game

More eyes needed.

JOE

Ireland

Corner, all day long.

Look, it wasn’t the result we wanted but it was better than losing in Denmark and heading back to Dublin with our tails between our legs.

Christie’s chance late in the first half was really the only chance that Ireland had in the whole game and after Denmark’s missed goal chance on the half-hour mark, really, we are lucky to be heading home with a 0-0.

The introduction of Shane Long was felt almost immediately. Within a couple of minutes of getting onto the pitch, Long made a bursting run down the right channel but surprise surprise, he was all by himself.

He cut inside from the right-hand side but with a heavy touch, it looked as though he lost the ball but luckily, it rebounded back to him off a defender.

Still unsupported, Long thought ‘what the hell’, I’ll have a strike at goal. At best, it might add to a shot on target and at worse, we might get a corner.

It was the worse scenario he got following his kick, or so he should have. As Long’s shot deflected off the Danish defender, Irish bodies were heading for the penalty box in order to get in a good position for what could be the last chance of a precious away goal for the Boys in Green.

However, somehow the referee pointed towards the six-yard box and we were left scratching our heads.

The corner might have come to nothing but a shocking decision all the same.
