The former Munster forward will be taking on the role of scrum coach from the start of next season.

Rumoured over the weekend, today Munster confirmed the new appointments to their backroom team.

Former Munster centre Brian Walsh will become an assistant to Anthony Foley, with a special responsibility for attack and backs while current skills coach Ian Costello has been promoted to assistant, with defence and kicking becoming his brief.

However, it is the return to Munster of Jerry Flannery that will be the headline news of the day. The Limerick hooker has spent the last year as a strength and conditioning coach at Arsenal in London but he is returning to his former club to take up a rugby role for the first time.

Fla becomes scrum coach under old team-mate Foley and a statement on the Munster Rugby website says that he will also have responsibility for academy and provincial age-grade squads.

Munster Rugby CEO Garrett Fitzgerald said on the site: “We have spent the last few months carrying out an extensive recruitment process and believe we have chosen the right candidates to take Munster forward.

“We have a unique situation here; in not only appointing all Irish coaches, we are extremely proud to appoint coaches that have learned their trade within the province. It is a reflection of the level of coaches on offer in Irish Rugby.

With Anthony at the helm we look forward to seeing this group work together in achieving success for Munster Rugby.”

As you might imagine, all here at JOE wish Fla all the best in his new gig.
