Germany are going home.
It’s a World Cup of surprises, but nobody expected this. Germany had been brought back to life when they beat Sweden last Saturday but it turned out that reports of their resurrection had been greatly exaggerated.
When will this World Cup come to its senses? Well, maybe the sight of favourites Brazil moving effortlessly into the last sixteen should remind people that the chaos won't last for ever, but on the day Germany had their worst tournament since 1938, nobody was embracing reasonableness just yet.
