The JOE World Cup Minipod #3 featuring Harry Kane, Harry Kane and Harry bloody Kane

JOE

Can England win it?

Gareth Southgate’s side experienced the full gamut of emotions in Volgograd on Monday night, except for the emotions they will experience as expectations rise ahead of what now appears to be inevitable World Cup victory.

That was the mood in England after Harry Kane’s late goal gave them victory against Tunisia.

The neutral watching might have felt that Gareth Southgate’s side struggled to overcome one of the worst teams in the competition but the analysis in England centred on the ‘exceptional’ performance.

Is this understandable for a team that has suffered so much? But will the much heralded likability of the England squad be damaged if the country loses the run of itself now?

On episode 3 of the JOE World Cup minipod, hosts Paddy McKenna and Dion Fanning are joined by Nooruddean Choudry to discuss this famous victory:

  • Where does this leave England’s pre-tournament low expectations?
  • Are this team as likeable as everyone says?
  • And, as Noz is sucked back into England supporting after years of ambivalence, how far can Gareth Southgate’s side go?
