Katie Taylor produces ‘best display of her career’ as she defends her World Lightweight titles

Phenomenal.

Make it 12-0 because Katie Taylor was utterly dominant as she successfully defended her WBA and IBF lightweights against Eva Wahlstrom at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

In fact, the BBC hailed Taylor’s performance as “the best display of her professional career” as she inflicted a first defeat on Wahlstrom.

The Bray boxer won each of the 10 rounds against the Finnish fighter and the outcome was never in doubt. Taylor won 100-90 on all three cards.

A combination of Taylor’s quick feet and ferocious body shots gave her a commanding lead by the fourth round as Wahlstrom had no other choice but to go on the offensive in the fifth round.

Shortly after, the Olympic gold medalist landed a brilliant series of punches and an uppercut that rocked the Finn.

Such was Taylor’s ferocity and speed, in the latter stages of the contest, a stoppage looked imminent but to Wahlstrom’s credit, she withstood the pressure and saw it out to the judges’ scorecards but the result was never in doubt.

After a commanding 2018,  Taylor will now be eyeing contests with champions from higher weight divisions in 2019 as she looks for some unification contests.

Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano and Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus were mentioned as potential opponents, as you can see below.

If Taylor continues on with this kind of form, she could very easily go through her professional career undefeated because the victory against Wahlstrom is her twelfth career win in 25 months and her fourth this year.

Phenomenal.
