Kevin Cassidy could raise a few heckles with his comments about Jim McGuinness today

We can’t imagine Kevin Cassidy’s column in Gaelic Life today went down too well with some Donegal fans.

Cassidy and McGuinness have something of a chequered history after the former Donegal manager famously dropped the defender from the panel for comments in ‘This is Our Year’, a book released at the end of the 2011 Championship season in which he revealed what went on behind the scenes in the Donegal camp.

McGuinness subsequently had to explain his decision in an incredibly awkward interview on TG4 when Cassidy, working as an analyst for the station, was standing a few metres away.

Since his departure from the panel, Cassidy has proved himself an accomplished GAA broadcaster and has shown no ill will towards McGuinness but one excerpt in particular from his column in Gaelic Life today might not go down too well with Donegal fans.

“I do feel that decisions and stances he took denied Donegal the opportunity to win one if not two more All Ireland’s,” Cassidy said.

It should be pointed out that Cassidy was also full of praise for the job McGuinness did with the county, saying: “He took a group of men who, let’s face it, were a laughing stock and turned them into the benchmark upon which the rest of the county judged themselves on.”
