League of Ireland manager offers extremely passionate critique of Ireland’s footballing culture

Paul Moore

Very interesting.

All eyes have been on the Irish team at Euro 2016 and as many of you will know, plenty of the players that wore the green jersey against Sweden, Belgium, Italy and France have all played in the League of Ireland at some point in their career.

Wes Hoolahan, James McClean, Shane Long, Seamus Coleman, Stephen Ward, David Meyler, Stephen Quinn and Daryl Murphy have all featured in the LOI at some point and whenever Ireland are eliminated from a major competition, there’s always a period of reflection as supporters take stock of the events that have unfolded while simultaneously evaluating our future prospects.

We’ve all asked questions like; where did things go wrong? Who might break into the international team? What’s being done to develop the next generation of Irish players?

After a two week break, the League of Ireland returned on Friday and Cobh Ramblers boss Stephen Henderson was in the dugout to see his side beat cash-strapped Athlone Town.

Athlone aren’t the only side struggling with their finances though, Waterford United are also in dire straits. While the majority of Irish supporters have been focusing on the events in France, Henderson has turned his attention to Ireland’s footballing landscape as a whole.

These tweets are sure to encourage debate.
