Brian O’Driscoll remarked that Wallabies captain James Horwill was a “lucky boy” to be cleared of an alleged stamping during the first Test last week, but maybe he isn’t so fortunate after all.

The lock was cited for stamping after appearing to trample on Alun-Wyn Jones’ head, but was cleared by the Australia Rugby Union after they declared on the balance of probabilities, there was no act of intentional foul play.

However the IRB has intervened – Aussie media keen to point out that the organisation’s HQ is in Dublin – as the Lions tour falls under the IRB’s remit and has a right to appeal any decision from the matches.

The appeal will be heard after the second Test, so even if found guilty, it is the final game that is in jeopardy for Horwill.

The ARU says in a response that it is “surprised and disappointed” by the IRB announcement about the Wallabies skipper, saying it is the first time the federation has exercised its right to set aside a “not guilty” verdict.

It could be a very eventful weekend for the skipper.

Leigh Halfpenny picks the MCG over shopping

Perhaps the most valuable player on the Lions Tour, Leigh Halfpenny decided against going shopping or visiting the St. Kilda district like most of the rest of the squad to take in one of the iconic sporting arenas the city has to offer.

You don’t have to be an die-hard cricket fan (just as well) to appreciate the MCG, or Melbourne Cricket Ground to give the full title, and Halfpenny was keen to take a visit while the squad are based in the city.

And you may have thought that he would avail of the privileges of being on the touring party, but the full-back paid the $20 admission fee.

Well he has been on the money since day one, so why change now?
