Lions Watch: Mike Phillips won’t be on Mastermind anytime soon and fashion victim Maitland

Ronan O’Gara suggests that if Mike Phillips had gunpowder for brains he wouldn’t blow his nose while Sean Maitland causing a stir with his fashion sense.

Ronan O’Gara suggests that if Mike Phillips had gunpowder for brains he wouldn’t blow his nose while Sean Maitland causing a stir with his fashion sense.

So Mike Phillips isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed then

He looks nailed on to take the number nine jersey when the Lions team to face the Wallabies is announced next week, but it is a good thing that he is a talented professional rugby player as he may not be an intellectual pillar of sense according to a former team-mate.

Ronan O’Gara’s column in The Irish Examiner is always a refreshing read with his honesty and experiences shared with the readers each week. This week the Munster man was discussing in part the make-up of the Lions team and discussing the merits of the Welsh scrum-half, who apparently has been introducing his rival Conor Murray as a ‘poor man’s Mike Phillips’.

The most entertaining aspect was describing the colourful side of the Welshman, reminiscing about days gone by in Cardiff when both teams would socialise after a Six Nations encounter.

Phillips, along with a couple of his team-mates were good hosts, but perhaps not the brightest crayons in the box.

“There’s hardly a brain cell between him (Mike Phillips),Lee Byrne and James Hook but they’re streetwise,” he said in today’s column.

It was since removed from the piece, but Mike might be avoiding the games of scrabble Down Under.

Cooper and Bowe marvel at Sean Maitland’s dress sense

We have seen some wonderful examples of Lions fashion since they arrived in Australia, but when it comes to making a statement, Sean Maitland may be the man of the moment.

Tommy Bowe tweeted the picture of the Kiwi-born back in a fetching outfit. The striking coloured pants, a cross between green and leopard print from what we can tell was finished off nicely with a pair of sailor shoes.

We don’t need to be Xposé fanatics to know that these colours don’t exactly blend that well, but we can only assume the fashion police had the day off.

His cousin Quade Cooper had what could be the only possible excuse possible for the daring outfit.
