Racing Metro owner Jack Lorenzetti confirmed today that the club have signed the Welsh scrum-half and he could turn out for his new team as early as this weekend.

Phillips has been without a club since he was sacked by Bayonne in October for allegedly being under the influence of alcohol at a team meeting but as one of the most talented scrum-halves in the European game, it was always likely that he would be snapped up sooner rather than later.

Phillips hinted at the weekend that a move was imminent and his switch to Racing Metro was confirmed today, with the confident Welshman set to be in the frame for selection for Racing’s Heineken Cup clash with Harlequins this weekend.

Although he’ll face competition from Maxime Machenaud for the number nine shirt, there is a good chance that Phillips will resume the half-back partnership he formed with Jonathan Sexton with the Lions during the summer, with the pair starting two out of three tests in the series win over the Wallabies.

The acquisition of Phillips only goes to strengthen the already talented squad at Racing, who are looking pretty well-placed for a place in the last eight of the Heineken Cup ahead of the double-header with Harlequins over the next two weekends.
